I want a lump sum to be paid out to me if I fall critically ill

In a nutshell  - Critical Illness Insurance - take out alone or as optional extra under Term Assurance Plans - allows for the lump sum benefit on death/diagnosis of critical illnesses.  Guaranteed or reviewable basis.

Stroke accounts for around 53,000 deaths each year in the UK BUT whilst your may have made provisions for your dependants if you die -- what if you join the ranks of the around 450,000 people* severely disabled as a result of stroke in England?

Heart Attack  There are 124,000 heart attacks each year - with men having nearly double the amount then women

Cancer rates have in the 40-59 age group has increased by almost a fifth in Great Britain, in one generation.  Since the 1970's a mans life time risk of developing bowel cancer has doubled and a woman's risk has also gone from one in 29 to one in 15*...

The above statistics make frightening reading.

Whilst critical illness insurance may not be able to ensure a happy ending - it can make the situation a little more tolerable.

Critical illness insurance can  allow you to recuperate how you want, with whom you want and where you want - without worrying about financial issues.

Generally, there are around 35 serious conditions that are covered by critical illness insurance.   The number and definitions of the illness’ covered will varies with different policies and  providers -- however they generally meet the Association of British Insurers (ABI) standard definitions but always read the small print.

Critical illness can be taken out on its  own (ie without life insurance), but we recommend taking out both as you will probably pay more for taking out a critical illness policy on its own.  Indeed, a critical illness insurance extension often comes as part of many life insurance polcies - please check your policy wording.

Different premium levels

  • Guaranteed Premiums means that the monthly premium is guaranteed to stay at the same level.  Most life insurance policieshave guaranteed premium included.  Critical illness insurance can have guaranteed and reviewable premiums but a guaranteed premium is generally the more expensive choice

  • Reviewable Premiums - means the monthly premium for your critical illness insurance policy will be fixed.   Normally the premiums are fixed for the  first 5 years.  Once the 5 years are up, there will be a review.  The review is based on actuarial factors.   Then some companies will fix the premium for another 5 years whilst others will review it every year.    Therefore your actual premium could therefore increase, decrease or remain level.

Crtical Illness Options:

  1. Permanent/Total Disability can be included with your critical illness insurance.  If you are diagnosed with a critical illness that stops you working -- and  that condition is permanent -- this policy pays out.    Any exclusion(s) that are applied will dependant on what you job is.

  2. Buy back with critical illness insurance.  What this gives you, is the flexability to  is to buy-back certain illnesses after you have a settled claim.   In other words,  should you become ill again, you are able to make an another claim - although the initial condition for which you claimed - will be excluded.

  3. Premium Waiver means that if you are off work due to sickness or injury for longer than 6 months,  the policy premiums can be waived and you get to keep the policy until you go back to work.  Again, your occupation together with your current health are deciding factors when exclusions are applied.
